MISSION
Enhancing the visibility of Queer/Trans-Black, Indigenous & People of Color (QTBIPOC) through radically inclusive spaces, skill development, and networking in order to protect, maintain and amplify our communities.
OBJECTIVE
Foster spaces for consultation and networking and direct high profile and/or revenue generating opportunities to QTBIPOC creatives, leaders and our communities.
ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND
Mainstream interest in Two Spirit, Queer or Trans Indigenous issues is almost non-existent. With the presentation and passing of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and the common practice of erasure we are seeing a rising rate of violence amongst Queer/Trans-Black, Indigenous and People of Color (QTBIPOC).
Across race/ethnicity, Native youth who are Two Spirit/LGBTQ+ have consistently reported the highest risk of violence due to hate crimes and suicide. It’s recorded that 23% of Indigenous LGBTQ+ youth reported attempting suicide in the past year, compared to their non-native peers.
In particular, Black transgender and nonbinary youth report disproportionate rates of suicide risk — with 58% seriously considering suicide and 1 in 4 attempting suicide in the past year. These disparities highlight the devastating impacts of historical and ongoing oppression and trauma inflicted on Black, Indigenous, and people of color.
A recent report found that 65% of Two Spirit/LGBTQ+ Natives experience sexual violence and 40% experienced child abuse while 90% experience two or more forms of violence in their lifetime. Comprehensive research, data and visibility on this issue is extremely limited which presents a problem when finding sustainable solutions to these rising statistics.
We see these rising rates and the erasure from mainstream interest as the most pressing issues for QTBIPOC communities. We believe by building safe space we are able to network, consult and develop QTBIPOC and combat these issues within our communities. INDIGiQUEER Creative Alliance is unique because we provide QTBIPOC creatives, leaders and communities safe space to connect, develop, and express themselves.
